The Narrative Fallacy

We construct coherent stories from events that were actually random or complex.

The human brain is a story-making machine. It finds patterns, assigns causes, and constructs narratives — even when events were largely unpredictable. Career success attributed entirely to hard work. A relationship failure attributed entirely to one person's fault. The narrative feels explanatory but it discards the complexity.

Try this

Take one important outcome (good or bad) from the last year. List every factor that contributed to it — including luck, timing, and others' actions. See what the narrative left out.

Ask yourself

What story are you telling yourself about a major outcome in your life — success or failure — that may be oversimplified? What does the fuller picture include?

Turn one idea into a daily practice. Life OS is a free, private two-minute check-in across the five pillars of a full life — with a Sunday review and a banyan that grows with you.
